Anacortes Rotary recognized Virginia Smiley as Rotarian of the Year at the club’s recent officer installation event.
Smiley has been a motivating force behind the club’s efforts to recognize a wide range of community volunteers for their local efforts. Smiley oversees the club’s Rotary International Foundation organization and funding. She takes part in the activities of other area Rotary clubs as well, offering assistance on projects with the Fidalgo Island and La Conner Rotary clubs.
She also volunteers for Hospice of the Northwest and is an active member of Soroptimist International of Anacortes.
During the meeting, Bonnie Bowers took over as president for the 2018-19 year and Stephanie Hamilton became president-elect.
Also singled out for honors were three other Rotarians: Meredith McIlmoyle for club service, Duane Clark for community service and Jack Darnton for chairing the giving committee which oversees grants to community and charitable groups.
Anacortes Rotary contributes approximately $100,000 each year to local organizations, scholarships and community programs. Anacortes Rotary seeks new applications for its grants each fall. Information on this year’s grant program will be available in early September at the club website:
